The OREO Story: 113 Years of Playful Connections — From New York to Nusantara

Some cookies are just snacks. OREO? It's a 113-year plot twist that nobody saw coming — and the whole world keeps eating up.

Born in a New York City Bakery (March 6, 1912)

It all started with a dare to be different. On March 6, 1912, the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco) created the very first OREO cookie at its legendary Chelsea factory on 9th Avenue, New York City. Sold in simple bulk tins at just $0.30 per pound in Hoboken, New Jersey, OREO was originally developed to meet the growing demand for an English-style biscuit popular at the time.

Here's the playful twist: OREO actually launched alongside two other products — the Goose Biscuit and Veronese Biscuit — marketed together as the "Trio." But consumers had other plans. OREO quickly outshone its companions and emerged as the undeniable star. Sometimes, the cookie chooses you.

By 1913, OREO was registered as an official Nabisco trademark — the beginning of what would become the world's best-selling cookie brand.

The Ritual That Changed Snacking Forever

What makes OREO unlike any other cookie on the planet isn't just what's inside — it's how you eat it.

  • 1923 — The Twist first appeared in advertising, introducing a playful new way to enjoy the cookie
  • 1950s — The Lick arrived with the iconic tagline: "Open up an OREO and take a lick!"
  • 1980s — The full Twist, Lick, Dunk ritual took shape — and snacking was never the same again

Today, this ritual isn't just an eating habit — it's a universal language of playfulness shared by families from Jakarta to Surabaya, from Medan to Makassar. One twist, and you're connected to over a century of joy.

A Cookie That Kept Reinventing Itself

OREO never sat still. The brand evolved its identity across decades while staying true to its delicious core:

  • 1912 — Original OREO Biscuit launched
  • 1916–17 — Cookie embossment redesigned — the basis of today's iconic look
  • 1948 — Evolved into OREO Crème Sandwich
  • 1974 — Became OREO Chocolate Sandwich Cookie (the name we know today)
  • 2018 — "Stay Playful" global creative platform launched
  • Today — Available in 100+ countries with continuous flavor innovation

The cookie's embossment itself is a work of art — featuring 12 florets, 12 dots, 6 triangles, and the Nabisco colophon. Every detail is intentional. Every detail is iconic.

OREO's Journey to Indonesia: A Playful Arrival

OREO arrived in Indonesia in the mid-1990s through Kraft Foods Indonesia (PT Kraft Indonesia), joining one of Southeast Asia's most vibrant snacking cultures. The timing was perfect — Indonesia's growing middle class was hungry for international quality, and OREO delivered.

A pivotal moment came in October 2012 when Kraft Foods' snacking division became Mondelez International. This transformation brought renewed investment in brand building, product innovation, and expanded distribution across Indonesia's vast archipelago of over 17,000 islands.

Today, OREO is proudly manufactured at the PT Mondelez Indonesia Manufacturing (MIM) facility in Bekasi, West Java — a world-class production hub that not only delivers fresh, high-quality cookies to Indonesian families from Sabang to Merauke, but also exports to more than 40 countries across Asia, the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.

Made right here in Indonesia, loved around the world. #BanggaBuatanIndonesia.

Halal Certified: A Promise You Can Trust

For the 87% of Indonesians who identify as Muslim, halal certification isn't a bonus — it's essential. OREO products in Indonesia carry official halal certification from BPJPH (Badan Penyelenggara Jaminan Produk Halal). All ingredients, manufacturing processes, and supply chain handling comply fully with Islamic dietary law. This isn't just a label. It's OREO's commitment to respect, transparency, and trust for every Indonesian family.

Innovation Never Stops: OREO Formats & Flavors in Indonesia

From the classic that started it all to exciting new twists, OREO offers a diverse range of flavors and formats for Indonesian snacking moments:

  • Sandwich Cookies — Original, Chocolate, Strawberry, Blueberry, Ice Cream
  • OREO Wafers — Chocolate and Vanilla
  • Oreo Softcake — Vanilla and Strawberry (for those who prefer an indulging chocolatey soft cake)
  • Multiple Pack Sizes — Start from IDR 2,000-an (perfect for a quick treat at your warung next door) to family packs (ideal for sharing during Joyful Family Time).

Each new flavor isn't just a product — it's an invitation to play.

OREO didn't chase trends to stay relevant for 113 years. It stayed true to its product and ritual — while finding creative, playful new ways to connect with each culture it entered.

Why OREO Exists: To Connect the World Through Playfulness

Behind every cookie is a purpose. OREO's brand mission is simple yet powerful: "To connect the world through playfulness."

In Indonesia, this translates beautifully. Whether it's a family sharing OREO during buka puasa, friends challenging each other to the perfect dunk on TikTok, or a child learning the Twist, Lick, Dunk ritual for the very first time — OREO sparks those moments of genuine connection that make life a little lighter.

Because playfulness isn't just for kids. It's for everyone who refuses to let life get too serious.
